Prediction ;) MS Office and Google Workspace are going away

June ‘26. Lots of organizations and people still use Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. My prediction is that it will disappear — or rather be substituted with a format more suitable for agents and source code. Maybe markdown in a git-controlled environment (like GitHub)?

Why?

Because with AI you can produce countless smart-looking documents. And do people read them? No — they hand them to AI to comment, edit, or update. This does not make sense.

Documentation stops being a deliverable of work.

When?

I am unsure, because the friction is big. But my guess is sometime in the next 3 years.

How the work used to flow

The pattern of digital white-collar work was a single track, and every step was a human:

The old workflow — a single human-only chain: get data, distill to writing, review and update, execute code or action based on the document. Every step is a human.

How it flows now

The work no longer runs on one track. It bounces between a human lane and an AI lane — and those handoffs are the whole point:

The new workflow — work moves between a human lane and an AI lane: get data together, human converses with AI about the data, AI distills it to a document, AI drafts code and a decision recommendation, then the human approves or adjusts, uses software, and communicates verbally.

The difference is big, and there is simply no reason to use human-centric office software anymore in the new modus operandi.

A personal footnote

It’s one of the reasons I sold MSFT stock some time ago.

I still hold Google, but given its meagre Gemini results, I’m thinking of exiting too.
